Community Medication and Needle Disposal

Proper disposal of prescription painkillers and used needles is a growing concern in communities across the country.  According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, used needles contribute to the spread of diseases such as Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B and HIV--putting sanitation workers, housekeepers, sewage workers and even family members and children at risk. 

 

Additionally, failing to properly dispose of unused opioid prescriptions can lead to the misuse of these medications, which is a major factor in the current opioid epidemic in the United States.  The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that improper use of opioid drugs "can lead to dependence and, when misused, opioid pain relievers can lead to overdose incidents and deaths."
